This is NOT a diet and exercise regimen. The is a lifestyle. Unlike diets that begin and end, this is for life. Followed regularly, readers and students may experience side effects like weight loss, lower blood pressure, lower blood sugar, more energy and increased happiness. DON’T STOP!
Medical studies show a correlation between the food we eat and disease.
In January 2013, a study in the New England Journal of Medicine showed 40% of deaths from stroke and heart disease could be prevented by eating a Mediterranean Diet rich in veggies, whole grains, legumes, nuts, olive oil and low fat meats and dairy.
Other medical studies show a correlation between processed foods (think empty carbs), sugar and an increased incidence of some cancers.
Healthy Plate introduces students and readers to new (healthier) ingredients and delicious recipes that use them. It has 4 tenets:
Ø Makeovers: Replace high-test ingredients with healthier choices.
Ø Takeovers: Add more veggies to recipes and meals and scale back the protein on the plate.
Ø Weekday Meals (aka Put Down That Pizza and No One Gets Hurt) make quick, healthy meals when there’s no time to cook.
Ø Flip the Plate: Make dessert a smaller portion of cheesecake or brownie and a larger serving of fresh fruit, nuts and coconut.
